LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV volleyball's Leka Kiner-Falefa was named the Mountain West's Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in a pair of come-from-behind, five-set victories for the week ending on October 7. This is the first career conference weekly honor for Kiner-Falefa.
The sophomore libero from Honolulu contributed 54 digs between the wins over San Jose State and Nevada, Reno with an average of 5.40 digs per set. Kiner-Falefa also added nine assists and one ace to go along with an overall .870 serve-reception percentage. In Thursday's contest at SJSU, she posted 25 digs, eight of which came in the decisive fifth frame, as well as eight assists. Two days later, she registered 29 digs and one assist against in-state rival UNR.
"Leka has played some outstanding matches this season, but this weekend we really saw her come through," noted UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick. "It doesn't matter what sport; defense is so key to winning. Leka provided us with solid defense against San Jose State and Nevada, Reno, which was key to our wins."
UNLV returns to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion to host four straight MW matches. The homestand begins with Thursday's 6:00 pm contest against Fresno State and continues Saturday against San Diego State (3:00 pm). The Rebels will host No. 21 Colorado State and Wyoming next week.
