Pair Recognized For Classroom Success|
Nov. 8, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball program had a pair of its student-athletes - Allison Davies and Madeline Westman - recognized for not only their athletic success, but also their academic prowess in the classroom. Davies and Westman were both tabbed to CoSIDA's Capital One Academic All-District 8 Second Team.
"Maddie and Allison have done a terrific job excelling in both the classroom and on the court," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "They exemplify the best qualities of being student-athletes."
Davies, a sophomore from Eugene, Ore., that owns a cumulative GPA of 3.96, leads the Rebels in digs with 367 - a figure that ranks as the eighth best in UNLV's single-season record book. She has amassed double digits in digs in 20 of the team's 24 matches this season. She had a career-high 33 digs against Wyoming on Oct. 11. The 33 digs were one shy of tying the program's single-match record set in 2007. Besides her defensive numbers, she has also contributed offensively with 42 assists and 18 digs.
Westman, who hails from Wauconda, Ill., is a junior with a 3.86 GPA in communications. She sits 23rd in the nation in blocks-per-set statistics (1.38), which has helped the Rebels rank 46th overall (2.54) as a team. She leads the team in all three blocking categories. She has amassed 127 total blocks with 19 of the solo variety and 108 more going down as assisted. Both the assisted and total block figures rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in the program's single-season record book. On the offensive side of the net, she owns a .295 hitting efficiency that has produced 245 kills. She has tallied 13 matches of 10 or more kills that includes a career-high 21 that came at Boise State (Sept. 22). She tied a single-match program record with a .769 hitting efficiency against Prairie View A&M (Sept. 7). Overall, she has hit .300 or better on 14 occasions this season.
The duo becomes the first Rebels to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team since Erin Greenwood was recognized in 2008 (third team). They are also the first pair to be named since Greenwood and Jessica Walters were chosen to the first team in '07.
Both student-athletes will see action tonight, as the Rebels open up their two-match road trip in Fort Collins, Colo., against the Colorado State Rams tonight at 7:00 pm MT (6:00 pm PT). UNLV and CSU sit deadlocked in second place in the Mountain West with identical 8-3 records.
