Rebels Head North For In-State Showdown|
Nov. 14, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels close out a two-week run of road matches with their trip to the northern portion of the Silver State to play in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Saturday. The match, which was originally slated for a 7:00 pm first serve, will begin at 1:00 pm to accommodate the Wolf Pack's home football game against San Jose State later that evening.
THE GOVERNOR'S SERIES: Besides the UNLV-UNR contest counting towards the Mountain West standings it also has implications in the 2013-14 Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold. The head-to-head competition between the universities' athletic departments was launched by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval on Oct. 8, 2012.
Currently, the Rebels lead the 2013-14 Governor's Series by three points (6.0-3.0). UNLV owns three points each from victories in football and women's soccer. In volleyball, the Scarlet & Gray won this season's previous meeting in sweeping fashion to at least grab 1.5 points. A victory will give UNLV the full allotment of three points.
Last year, UNLV claimed the inaugural 2012-13 Governor's Series title with a 27-point differential (37.5-10.5) between itself and UNR.
WATCH THE STREAM: The UNLV Rebels will have Saturday's match streamed live by NevadaWolfPack.TV via the Mountain West Network. Links for the live stream as well as live stats can be found at UNLVRebels.com.
ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels return to the Cox Pavilion for one last home stand on Nov. 21 and 23 following the trip to Reno, Nev. UNLV will open up with a visit from the Utah State Aggies, the first for the squad as a member of the Mountain West, on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 pm. Two days later, the Rebels will close out their 2013 home schedule with a "Senior Day" match against Boise State at 2:00 pm. Sekola Falemaka, Stephanie Thelen and Madeline Westman will be recognized for their tenure as members of the Scarlet & Gray.
WESTMAN'S ACADEMICS: The UNLV volleyball program had one of its own student-athletes - Madeline Westman - earn one of seven spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 First Team. Westman is no stranger to academic success, as the senior was tabbed to the organization's district 8 second team a year ago.
The Wauconda, Ill., native and communications major carried a 3.86 grade point average into her senior campaign. As the 2013 season has progressed, Westman has become UNLV's program leader in total blocks and assisted blocks, while moving up in the sets played (fourth), hitting efficiency (fourth) and kills (fifth) categories.
Besides the CoSIDA recognition, Westman is also three-time Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award recipient (2010-11 to 2012-13) and has been tabbed to the Fall Academic All-MW Team three times (2010-12). Based on her on-court performance, she has been selected to the all-conference team the past two seasons.
Joining Westman on the All-District 8 First Team were Saint Mary's Kristina Graven, Fresno State's Marissa Brand, San Francisco's Rebecca Kopilovitch, USC's Natalie Hagglund, Pacific's Kat Schulz and Oregon State's Tayla Woods.

Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack (2-24, 0-14 Mountain West): The Wolf Pack, who host San Diego State on Thursday night, enter the week losers of its last 17 matches with 14 of those occurring in Mountain West play.
