ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV cross country team opened its 2017 season with a third-place showing at New Mexico's Lobo Invitational. Emma Wahlenmaier, who finished 15th overall with a time of 19:30.30, led the Rebel contingent in the 5K held at the UNM North Golf Course -- the site of the Mountain West Championships in late October.

The host Lobos won the meet with 23 total points and a total time of 1:31:39.30. New Mexico State finished in second place with 79 points and a time of 1:40:28.30. UNLV tallied 87 points and clocked a time of 1:41:01.30 for third. Fresno State (88 points/1:40:49.11), UTEP (104/1:58:40.70) and New Mexico Highlands (143/1:51:57.70) rounded out fourth through sixth place, respectively.

Lindy Eskin (17th/19:41.50), Spencer Moore (21st/20:18.80), Elisa Rovere (24th/20:32.90), Kassidy Deardorff (28th/20:57.80) scored for UNLV, while Nicole Snow (34th/22:13.30) also participated in the race.

STAT OF THE MEET: Three of UNLV's six runners that ran in the Lobo Invitational are freshmen (Deardorff, Rovere and Wahlenmaier). In all, the Rebels had four underclassmen run Saturday's 5K, as Snow is a sophomore. Eskin and Moore are seniors.

REBEL OF THE MEET: Wahlenmaier ran a team-best 19:30.30 to finish 15th overall.

QUOTABLE: "Today, we executed our initial race plan," said head coach Jebreh Harris. "We are learning each other with every step and every day. With the first meet of the season and a lot of training to get in, we will keep moving up from here. Emma (Wahlenmaier) did a great job today. We all have to keep challenging ourselves more and continue to work together in a positive fashion like we did today."

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels return to Las Vegas and Craig Ranch Regional Park to host their own UNLV Invitational on September 23. The meet, which begins at 7:15 am with the college/university men's 6K, will be comprised of six races ranging between the high school and collegiate levels. The college/university women's 5K, which UNLV will run in, is slated to start at 8:00 am.
