Riverside, Calif. - The Rebel cross country team competed at the 27th annual UC Riverside Invitational Saturday, finishing ninth out of 22 teams, their best finish of the season. The Rebels improved on last year's 18th place finish at the same event.

UNLV got an outstanding performance from Charlotte Browning, who again was the Rebel's top finisher. Browning completed the 5,000 meter course in 17:42.80, good for ninth place overall. It was also the best time for a UNLV harrier in program history, and the first time since 2000 that a Rebel runner bested the 18 minute mark.

UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez won the women's division, finishing the course in 16:52, a course record by more than 15 seconds. The host Highlander women also took the team title, finishing 15 points ahead of the second place finisher, See Jane Run.

Jenni Shearer finished the trek 18:43, placing her in 45th place overall. Ashley Silva completed the course in 19:14 for 77th place, while Gabriela Benito (19:46, 108th), Laura Lundin (19:54, 118th) and Ali Ainsworth (20:07, 128th) and Jessica Heil (20:11, 130th) all scored for the Rebels.

UNLV is done with their California trips for the fall, and will turn their attention to the Arizona State Invite next Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
