LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's cross country has received signed letters of intent from seven student-athletes who will enroll next fall and be eligible to compete for the Rebels during the 2009 season, the athletics department announced today.

The group is made up of four high school recruits and three junior college athletes, and all of them are from California. The prep signees are Courtney Allen, Lexie Bravo, Allison Motor and Lauren Petersen, while the transfers are Lucy Buester, Sarah Muniz and Shannon Simpson.

"I am very excited about next year's incoming class," UNLV cross country head coach Tony Houchin said. "These student-athletes are going to come in and have an immediate impact on our conference standing as a team. We now have the depth we've been looking for since I have been at UNLV."

Allen is a senior at San Benito High School in Hollister, Calif., and she is a three-time state qualifier in the cross country, placing 47th overall in the state as a senior with a time of 18:59. She finished fourth in the 2008 Central Coast Section meet and boasts personal bests of 5:08.61 in the 1,600 and 11:30.29 in the 3,200. Bravo is a senior at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and has run a personal best of 11:43.45 in the 3,200 meters.

Motor and Petersen are teammates at Galt High School in Galt, Calif., and both had strong careers, with Motor clocking a personal best of 5:10.15 in the 1,600 meters while also qualifying for the state meet in 2008. Petersen is a two-time state qualifier who finished 20th overall as a junior and 29th as a senior, while also placing second (2008) and third (2007) at the San Joaquin Section meet. She has clocked personal-best times of 5:10.58 in the 1,600 meters, 10:14.94 in the 3,000 meters and 11:11.14 in the 3,200 meters.

The trio of transfers comes to UNLV from Cerritos (CA) College, where they helped the team win the 2008 California Community College Track and Field State Championship and all of them will look to move into the Rebel lineup right away.

Buester was named a CCCA All-American as a sophomore by placing fourth overall in the state in the 10,000 meters, and she has personal bests of 18:40.17 in the 5,000 meters and 39:06.85 in the 10,000 meters. Muniz was also an All-American, placing fourth in the steeplechase and has posted personal bests of 11:47.66 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 18:51.46 in the 5,000 meters. Simpson was a two-time All-American in 2008, coming in third overall in the 10,000 meters and sixth in the 5,000 meters. She has run times of 18:33.63 in the 5,000 meters and 38:46.62 in the 10,000 meters.

"The last two seasons have been the best the Rebel cross country program has had since 2000," Houchin said. "I believe this group will be able to build off of that and improve what we have done the past couple of seasons."
