LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV cross country program had a duo of student-athletes recognized for their classroom achievement, as they were named to the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award, announced by the league office today. Samantha Swan earned her second award, while Shannon Simpson was recognized for the first time.
Both Swan (3.81, hospitality management) and Simpson (3.67, kinesiology) were named to the 2010 Academic All-MW honor back in the fall, as well.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
A league-record 581 student-athletes were honored by the MW today. This year's tally greatly surpasses the previous conference record of 549 honorees set in 2008-09.
