LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV cross country program opens up its 2013 season on the road in Sparks, Nev., for the Nature's Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic hosted by Nevada, Reno on Saturday evening at Shadow Mountain Park. This will be the third consecutive year that the Rebels have kicked off a season in the northern portion of the state.
The meet features races that range from 3000 (3K) to 6000 (6K) meters and are further broken down by secondary school and collegiate classifications.
UNLV is entered in the college/open women's race 4000m (4K), which is slated for 9:11 pm, after an eighth grade and under boys and girls race gets the event started at 6:30 pm.
"We are looking forward to our race in Sparks this weekend," said cross country head coach Jebreh Harris. "Our student-athletes have been working together as a unit and we are ready to start our competitive season with a healthy effort."
The Rebels will be represented by four returning harriers - Amanda Berg, Auzsane Crowe-Carter, Iris Munguia and Sara Williams - and four more - Ryanne Bailey, Katie Cochran, Heather Hernandez-Shaw and Arielle Steimer-Barragan - that will run their first meet for the Scarlet & Gray.
The Twilight Classic is the first of five races that the Rebels will run this fall including their own UNLV Cross Country Invitational at Sunset Park on Sept. 28, and the Mountain West Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Nov. 1.
