IRVINE, Calif. - UNLV cross country opened its season on Saturday morning, finishing 15th with 119 points in the UC Irvine Invitational, held at Central Park in Huntington Beach, Calif. It was the also the first meet for the Rebels under the direction of new head coach Tony Houchin.

Sophomore distance runner Jenni Shearer paced the Rebels, coming in 65th with a total time of 20:19.1 on the 5,000 meter course. Shearer picked up where she left off last year, as she has been the highest finisher for UNLV in every meet she has run in during her short career.

Ali Ainsworth followed coming in 131st (22:00.9), then Lekiesha Lawson in 164th (24:43.0), Desarae Tyson in 167th (24:49.8) and then Tanesha Carr in 183rd (30:53.2).

UC Irvine won the meet with 21 total points, as the host Anteaters had runners finish one-two overall. Lara Olvera won the meet with a time of 17:07.7 and Sara Mickelson was second with a time of 17:31.1. UC Santa Barbara came in second as a team with 29 points followed by UC San Diego which had 40 points.

UNLV continues its season next Saturday, returning to California for the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State.
