Rebels Back In California|
Sept. 24, 2004
Las Vegas - The UNLV women's cross country team will be on one of the biggest stages for the sport this weekend, as the Rebels will run in the 31st Annual Stanford Invitational, held at the Stanford golf course on Sept. 25.
The college races feature 800 athletes from 50 teams, which make up just a small part of the invite. It also includes the region's top junior college and high school cross country runners. Nearly 4,000 runners have entered the meet.
Headlining the women's collegiate race will be host Stanford, which won last year's NCAA cross country title and is currently ranked No. 1 in the country heading into Saturday's meet. The Rebels join a field of 21 teams that includes the Cardinal, No. 8 UCLA, Santa Clara, Kentucky, San Diego State, Fresno State and UC Davis.
UNLV took last weekend off after opening the season with two meets in California. Michele Suszek has had a strong senior season so far for the Rebels, placing fifth at the UC Irvine Invite and 12th at the Fullerton Season Opener.
Saturday's meet gets underway at 9:30 a.m. with the girl's junior varsity high school race, the first of 22 races in the meet. The women's collegiate 6k race gets underway at 5:15 p.m.
