Sept. 25, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After taking a week off from competition, the Rebel cross country team returns to action this Saturday at nearby Sunset Park with their UNLV Invitational. The meet will be comprised of five races beginning with the college/university women's 5K at 7:30 am and concluded with a community 5K at 10:00 am.
UNLV's harriers will get things started bright and early in the opening race against Southern Utah and Dixie State. The Rebels, who are coming off a dual victory over the University of Hawai'i at the Big Wave Invitational 5K in Hawai'i on Sept. 14, have been led Auzsane Crowe-Carter in both of their races this season.
Crowe-Carter opened the year with a sixth-place showing at the Nature's Bakery Twilight Classic 4K before crossing the finish line in seventh in the Aloha State.
"We are excited to host our home meet at Sunset Park this year," said Rebel cross country head coach Jebreh Harris. "I want our ladies to really focus on competing to the best of their abilities and not leave the course as if we had more to give. We have had some tough training as of recent, but we are continuously getting closer as a unit and that is benefiting our training. I am looking forward to a competitive effort and great team support at this meet."
Joining Crowe-Carter on the 5K course will be teammates Laura Affeld, Kayah Agudo, Ryanne Bailey, Amanda Berg, Heather Hernandez-Shaw, Rhea Hill, Miranda Menzies, Iris Munguia, Arielle Steimer-Barragan and Sara Williams.
Following the conclusion of the women's 5K, the college/university men's 5K will go off at 8:10 am between Southern Utah and Dixie State.
After both college/university races are in the books, two high school races will follow. The girls race is scheduled for 8:50 am with a boys race set for 9:30 am.
"The high school teams and the community 5k will follow the college sections," notedHarris. "I am happy that we can help highlight some of the local talent that Las Vegas has to offer. I project that the high school portion with be highly competitive and entertaining to watch. With the community 5k, it is a great opportunity to bring the local community and UNLV even closer. Year by year I want this meet to be more productive in our relationship with the city of Las Vegas. We are excited for this upcoming weekend."
