Oct. 27, 2010
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels conclude their 2010 regular-season schedule at the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships in Laramie, Wyo., on Friday, Oct. 29. The University of Wyoming's Jacoby Golf Course is the host site for the women's 6k event, which is slated for a 10:00 am MT (9:00 am PT) start.
UNLV enters the championship after participating in four meets earlier this fall, all of which were 5k distances.
Lauren Petersen has been the top harrier for the Rebels this season. Petersen ran a 17:32.9 at the UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational for the fourth-fastest performer spot in program history and most recently ran a 17:43.4 at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara.
"This is the meet that we have prepared for all season long," noted cross country coach Tony Houchin. "This is the one that we have a gold star around on the calendar from day one. Our training has been going the way we have wanted it to and we should have our best day of the year on Friday."
Historically speaking, the BYU Cougars won eight consecutive conference titles from 1999 to 2006 and have since finished second each of the past three years. The New Mexico Lobos, ranked 10th nationally, have won the league crown the past two seasons and enters 2010 as the front-runner. The Lobos are paced by Ruth Senior and Lacey Oeding, who finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 2009 championship.
