Rebels To Run At MW Championships
Oct. 31, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Rebel cross country team will travel to Colorado to compete at the 2013 Mountain West Cross Country Championships on Friday. The MW's men's 8K and women's 6K races will be contested at the Eisenhower Blue Course on the grounds of the United States Air Force Academy.
UNLV's harriers will race at 10:45 am MT (9:45 am PT) following the conclusion of the men's race that kicks off the festivities 45 minutes earlier.
The Rebels enter the race after six of their own set personal-best times in last week's Titan Invitational 5K in Fullerton, Calif. Auzsane Crowe-Carter led the contingent with a 15th-place finish off a final time of 18:19.1 PB.
"I'm looking for us to do better than we did last year as a unit," said Rebel cross country head coach Jebreh Harris. "This season we have been performing ahead of where we were at certain points last year and we expect the same positivity this weekend. The Mountain West Championship is always a highly competitive meet and we are going to compete to the best of our abilities. I know our young ladies put a lot of hard work to be where we are as program. There is no question that we will put it all on the line on championship day."
New Mexico enters Friday's race ranked ninth in the latest USTFCCCA National Poll and winners of the last five conference championships. The Lobos aren't the only MW team receiving national recognition with Boise State ranked 25th in the poll.
Individually, those two programs have the top two performers on the season. BSU's Emma Bates earned USTFCCCA Division I Women's National Athlete of the Week on Oct. 21 for her win at the 2013 Pre-National Invitational in 20:09 on Oct. 19. Bates owns the conference's top times in the 4K, 5K and 6K this season. UNM's Charlotte Arter, a runner-up at the 2012 MW Championship, ran a 20:15 in the 6K at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
Historically, UNLV's best finish at the league meet came in the MW's inaugural year of 1999. The Rebels placed fourth overall that season in the 5K. A year later, the championship was contested as a 6K and witnessed the Scarlet & Gray place sixth overall, while Katie Barto finished sixth in a time of 21:16.3 - the best finish by a Rebel in MW history.
