LAS VEGAS - UNLV cross country will run at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday morning, a 6K race hosted by the University of Portland at Blue Lake Park in Gresham, Ore.
The Rebels will have six runners competing under head coach Tony Houchin, with four of those student-athletes making their first appearance at a regional meet. Sophomores Jenni Shearer and Ali Ainsworth are the two Rebels who have raced at a regional meet before. Also running for UNLV will be Gabriela Benito, Ernestine Johnson, Laura Lundin and Desarae Tyson.
Number-one ranked Stanford is the favorite at the West Regional, as the Cardinal have won the past seven NCAA West Regional titles. Other ranked teams in the women's field include No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, No. 8 Arizona State and No. 29 Washington.
The West Regional is one of nine regional meets with qualifying teams advancing to the 2006 NCAA Championships on Nov. 20 in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6,000 meter race will begin at 12:00 p.m. (PST) followed by the men's 10,000 meter race at 1:15 pm at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course.
The women's race will kick off the meet tomorrow morning and it is set to start at 11:00 a.m. (PST) with the men's 10K race following at 12:15 p.m.
